Clinical Sub-Specialty Training Fellowships — Paediatric Haematology and Neonatology

The Registrar, School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University invites Paediatricians to apply for a 2-year Clinical Training Fellowship Programme in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (PHO) and in Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine (PNM)/Neonatology at the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, commencing August 2025.

About the programme This clinical sub-specialty training fellowship provides qualified paediatricians with structured, supervised training in two high-demand paediatric sub-specialties. The Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (PHO) track focuses on the diagnosis and management of blood disorders and childhood cancers, building skills needed to expand specialist paediatric oncology and haematology services. The Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine (PNM)/Neonatology track focuses on the care of newborns, particularly those who are premature, low birth weight, or otherwise ill, strengthening specialist neonatal care capacity.

Training and mentorship Fellows will train within the clinical and academic environment of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences and its affiliated teaching hospitals, under the supervision of specialist consultants and academic staff. Over the two-year programme, trainees are expected to develop advanced clinical competencies in their chosen sub-specialty, alongside teaching and research skills appropriate to a sub-specialist career.

Why this training matters Childhood cancers and blood disorders, as well as complications of pregnancy and the newborn period, remain major causes of illness and death among children in Uganda and across sub-Saharan Africa. Access to specialist paediatric haematology-oncology services and skilled neonatal care is often limited, and expanding the number of trained sub-specialists is essential to improving outcomes. Clinical sub-specialty fellowship training allows paediatricians to develop advanced skills in the diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of these conditions within the clinical and academic environment of Makerere University College of Health Sciences and its affiliated teaching hospitals. Beyond clinical competence, fellows build the teaching and research capabilities needed to train other health workers, generate local evidence, and advocate for stronger services for children. The two-year structure provides immersive, mentored training, while starting in August, the programme aligns with the academic calendar. Structure and expectations The two-year fellowship is intended to provide structured, progressive clinical training under specialist supervision, culminating in competencies that qualify the fellow to practice at a sub-specialist level. While the primary focus is clinical training, fellows are expected to engage with the academic life of the College of Health Sciences, including teaching, case discussions and research activities relevant to their sub-specialty. Those completing the training are expected to contribute to expanding specialist services and training future cadres of paediatricians in Uganda.
