Clinical Sub-Specialty Fellowship Training — Paediatric Haematology/Oncology and Neonatology

About the programme The College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, is pleased to announce a call for applications for Clinical Sub-Specialty Fellowship Training Programmes for the August 2026 intake. Applications are invited for the following two-year fellowship programmes aimed at advancing specialised clinical skills in paediatric care: - Paediatric Haematology and Oncology - Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine (Neonatology)

The programmes are designed to equip paediatricians with advanced sub-specialty competencies so that they can provide high-quality specialist care and contribute to strengthening paediatric services in Uganda. Sub-specialty training of this kind fills a critical gap in the national health workforce: many children with blood disorders, cancers and neonatal conditions currently depend on a very small number of specialists, and expanding the trained workforce is essential to improving outcomes across the country.

The fellowships combine structured clinical training with exposure to specialist practice, preparing fellows to diagnose and manage complex paediatric conditions, lead specialist services, and mentor the next generation of clinicians.

Eligibility Applicants must: - Hold a Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health (or equivalent). - Possess a valid registration and practising licence. These requirements ensure that fellows already have a solid foundation in general paediatrics before they specialise, and that they are fully licensed to practise while undertaking the programme.

Available positions The following training slots are available: - Paediatric Haematology and Oncology - 4 slots - Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine (Neonatology) - 4 slots

Scholarship information A fully funded scholarship is available for the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology programme. Scholarships for the Neonatology programme are currently available to Ugandan applicants, preferably those working in regional referral hospitals. The focus on regional referral hospital staff is a deliberate strategy to distribute specialist skills beyond Kampala and strengthen care in the regions where most Ugandans receive hospital services.

The motivation statement is an opportunity to explain why you wish to specialise in the chosen field, how the training fits into your career plans, and how you intend to use the skills gained to improve paediatric care.

Advancing specialist care in Uganda Paediatric haematology and oncology covers the care of children with blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, anaemias and bleeding disorders, as well as childhood cancers, while perinatal and neonatal medicine focuses on the care of newborn infants, particularly those who are premature, unwell or require specialist support in the first weeks of life. Both areas are in high demand in Uganda, where the number of trained specialists is far smaller than the population's needs. Completing one of these fellowships positions a paediatrician to lead a specialist unit, contribute to national treatment protocols, train junior clinicians and improve survival and quality of life for some of the most vulnerable patients.

Selection process Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews at the School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences. Interviews allow the selection committee to assess candidates' clinical background, motivation and fit with the programme before final offers are made.
