Africa's biggest engineering innovation prize is open for its 13th cycle, offering GBP 50,000 top prize plus commercialisation support. Stage 1 applications close September 8, 2026 at 4pm UTC+1.

The Africa Prize awards crucial commercialisation support to innovators developing scalable engineering solutions to local challenges, including medical engineering, biotechnology and ICT innovations relevant to health. Shortlisted finalists receive training, mentoring, media exposure and lifelong alumni network access, with the winner taking GBP 50,000 and a 'One to Watch' award also available. The two-stage process begins with technical review of Stage 1 entries, then longlisted candidates complete a business-focused Stage 2 in October-November 2026. Shortlists decided by December 2026 and all outcomes announced by January 2027. Ugandan innovators have featured strongly in past cohorts.

Eligibility

Individuals and teams who are citizens of and living in a sub-Saharan African country (including Uganda), aged 18+, with engineering innovations at an early stage of commercialisation; hardware needs a working prototype, software needs an MVP with user traction.

How to apply

Access the Royal Academy's Grant Management System, select 'Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2026/2027 Stage 1', and submit the innovation details, endorsement letter, technical schematic and image by September 8, 2026.
