Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), Embassy Track

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is the South Korean government's flagship scholarship for international students, funded by NIIED; the Embassy Track is administered locally through the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Uganda.

## About this scholarship GKS funds bachelor's, master's, doctoral and research-level study at Korean universities for students from NIIED-designated countries, including Uganda. Under the Embassy Track, candidates apply directly through their home country's Korean embassy rather than through an individual university; Uganda's Embassy Track has historically offered several graduate-level places per year.

## Who can apply - Applicants must be citizens of an NIIED-designated country (Uganda is included); neither the applicant nor their parents may hold Korean citizenship. - Master's applicants need a completed Bachelor's degree; Doctoral applicants need a completed Master's degree, finished by NIIED's deadline for that round. - Applicants must meet a minimum CGPA from their most recent degree (at least the 80th percentile / top 20% of class, or a GPA equivalent to 2.64/4.0, 2.80/4.3, 2.91/4.5, or 3.23/5.0). - Applicants must generally be under 40 years old (professors from ODA-recipient countries may apply up to age 45 under certain tracks). - Applicants must be physically and mentally fit to complete the full period of study in Korea.

## What it covers - Round-trip economy-class airfare. - Tuition fees (up to KRW 5,000,000 per year). - Korean language training support. - A monthly living stipend (around KRW 1,200,000 during Korean language training, and KRW 1,380,000 during the degree programme, as of 2026). - Health insurance. - Research-related support for eligible programmes.

## How to apply Embassy Track applicants apply through the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Uganda, choosing up to three universities in order of preference (at least one choice must come from the Type B university list). Required documents typically include the application form, personal statement, study or research plan, an academic recommendation letter, proof of citizenship, degree certificates and transcripts, and a medical assessment. Scholars must reach at least TOPIK Level 3 during or after their Korean language training.
