Twyford seeks a Factory Medical Officer/Factory Nurse for their Kapeeka factory. Full-time role providing emergency medical care, first aid, health surveillance, and clinic management for factory employees.
The Factory Medical Officer is responsible for providing immediate medical care and emergency response to employees in the event of workplace injuries, accidents, or sudden illnesses. This role manages the factory clinic, administers first aid treatment for minor injuries, coordinates emergency medical evacuations for serious cases, and maintains first aid supplies and medical records.
Key Responsibilities:
Emergency Response & First Aid Treatment - Provide immediate first aid and emergency medical care to employees who sustain workplace injuries - Assess the severity of injuries and determine whether further treatment at an external medical facility is required - Coordinate with external emergency services (ambulance, hospitals) for serious cases requiring hospitalisation - Respond to medical emergencies such as fainting, seizures, cardiac events, and other sudden illnesses
Minor Injury & Illness Management - Treat minor workplace injuries, including wound cleaning, suturing, dressing, and administration of basic medications - Provide treatment for common occupational health issues such as muscle strains, eye irritations, heat exhaustion, and dermatitis - Monitor and follow up on employees recovering from injuries
Medical Supplies & First Aid Kit Management - Manage and maintain the factory clinic inventory, including medications, dressings, disinfectants, and medical equipment - Ensure all first aid kits across the factory are fully stocked, properly maintained, and accessible - Conduct regular inspections of first aid boxes and replenish supplies as needed
Medical Records & Documentation - Maintain accurate and confidential medical records for all employees treated at the factory clinic - Document all workplace injuries, including the nature of injury, treatment provided, and recommendations - Prepare and submit injury reports to the EHS Manager and HR for statutory reporting and insurance claims
Health Surveillance & Preventive Care - Support the implementation of workplace health surveillance programs - Conduct health education sessions for employees on topics such as personal hygiene, injury prevention, and ergonomics - Advise management on workplace health risks and recommend preventive measures
Health & Safety Committee Support - Serve as a member of the factory Safety and Health Committee, providing medical expertise - Advise on first aid requirements based on workplace risk assessments
Employee Wellness & Health Promotion - Promote employee wellness through health awareness campaigns and wellness programs - Provide health advice and counselling to employees on lifestyle, nutrition, and stress management
Emergency Preparedness - Participate in the development and review of emergency response plans - Conduct first aid training for designated first aiders across the factory - Participate in emergency drills and simulations to test response readiness
Qualifications & Experience:
Education: - Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Clinical Medicine, or a related medical field from a recognised institution - Registration with the relevant Ugandan professional body is mandatory
Experience: - Minimum 2-4 years of clinical experience, preferably in occupational health, emergency medicine, or industrial healthcare settings - Experience in a manufacturing, construction, or industrial environment is highly desirable - Previous experience in managing a workplace clinic or infirmary is an advantage
Language Requirement (Mandatory): - Fluent in English (spoken and written) - Proficiency in local languages (e.g., Luganda) is an advantage
Technical Skills: - Strong knowledge of first aid, emergency response, and occupational health practices - Ability to assess and treat a wide range of workplace injuries and illnesses - Proficiency in maintaining medical records and documentation - Knowledge of Uganda's Occupational Safety and Health Act requirements
Certifications (Preferred): - First Aid Certificate or Advanced First Aid training - Basic Life Support (BLS) or Emergency First Response certification - Occupational Health Nursing certification is an advantage
Soft Skills: - Calm, composed, and decisive in emergency situations - Strong communication and interpersonal skills - Empathy and compassion in dealing with injured or ill employees - High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism
Other Requirements: - Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends - Physically fit to respond quickly to emergencies across the factory premises - Valid practising licence from the relevant Ugandan medical regulatory body - Prior work experience in Uganda is essential
