Emerging Global Leader Award (K43)

The Emerging Global Leader Award (K43) is a career development grant from the Fogarty International Center at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, designed to launch early-career researchers based in low- and middle-income countries into independent research leadership.

## About this grant The K43 award provides several years of protected research time and salary support to a junior faculty member or research scientist at an LMIC academic or research institution, combining career development activities with a research project that addresses health priorities in the awardee's own country. Applicants may work in any health-related discipline. Two parallel funding announcements exist: PAR-24-295 for projects requiring an independent clinical trial, and PAR-24-296 for projects that do not.

## Who can apply - Applicant must be a citizen of a low- or middle-income country (LMIC), per World Bank income classifications; dual U.S. citizens and permanent residents are not eligible - Must hold an academic junior faculty position or research scientist appointment at an eligible LMIC institution, held for at least one year - Must hold at least a master's degree that required a research thesis - Applicants already serving as PD/PI of a multi-year R01-equivalent independent research grant are not eligible - Country eligibility follows the same list used for Fogarty International Training Grants - Two primary mentors are required: one at the LMIC applicant institution and one at a collaborating U.S. institution

## What it covers - Up to $100,000 per year toward the awardee's salary, plus fringe benefits based on the institution's rate and percent effort - Up to $40,000 per year toward research development costs - Limited facilities-and-administrative (indirect) costs for foreign institutions, capped at 8% of total direct costs less equipment - Award duration of three, four, or five years, chosen by the applicant - Awardees must commit at least 75% of full-time professional effort (minimum 9 person-months, or 30 hours/week)

## How to apply - Applicant and both mentors must have an eRA Commons username - Submit a Research Strategy combining the candidate and research sections (12-page maximum), plus a Data Management and Sharing Plan - Include biosketches for the applicant and mentors, and a separate mentor statement from each primary mentor - Reference letters are submitted via eRA Commons by the deadline - Consult PAR-24-295 (independent clinical trial required) or PAR-24-296 (not allowed) for full instructions
