Humanity & Inclusion (HI) Uganda works to improve access to essential services for people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. HI Uganda invites qualified consultants, consultancy firms, research institutions or multidisciplinary teams to submit proposals to undertake a study on Digital Manufacturing for Prosthetics and Orthotics Services in Uganda.

Background

Access to prosthetic and orthotic services in Uganda remains constrained by limited technical capacity, high production costs, long waiting times and limited geographical coverage. Many people who need prosthetic and orthotic devices face significant barriers in accessing timely, affordable and good-quality services, particularly outside major urban centres.

Digital manufacturing technologies, including 3D scanning, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing, offer opportunities to improve the efficiency, quality, accessibility and sustainability of prosthetics and orthotics services. These technologies have the potential to shorten production times, reduce costs, enable more personalised fitting and expand service coverage to underserved areas.

Objective and scope

HI seeks to generate operational evidence comparing digital and conventional manufacturing approaches in Uganda. The study will assess and compare:

• Cost.
• Efficiency.
• Clinical effectiveness.
• User outcomes.
• Operational performance.

The selected consultant or team will be expected to design and implement a rigorous comparative study, drawing on operational data and stakeholder engagement to produce credible evidence on the two manufacturing approaches. The assignment will involve both desk-based and field-based work, engaging service providers, technicians and users of prosthetic and orthotic services, and is expected to result in actionable findings and recommendations.

Findings are expected to inform HI's programming and contribute operational evidence to strengthen access to quality prosthetics and orthotics care for people with disabilities in Uganda.

Eligibility

The call is open to qualified consultants, consultancy firms, research institutions or multidisciplinary teams with the capacity to deliver the assignment as described in the full Terms of Reference. Interested applicants must demonstrate relevant technical expertise in prosthetics and orthotics services, rehabilitation or disability programming, and robust research methods suited to comparative operational studies. Experience in digital manufacturing technologies and in conducting studies within the Ugandan or regional health context will be an added advantage.
