A PhD student position is available to develop a thesis within the SUPPORT project (funded by EDCTP3), under the action "Supporting the next generation of African researchers on preventing HIV pediatric mortality through a training network". The project is a highly multidisciplinary, international and competitive training programme in paediatrics research, hosted at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.

About the SUPPORT project SUPPORT is an EDCTP3-funded training network aimed at building the next generation of African researchers working to prevent HIV-related mortality in children. The programme brings together academic institutions across Africa and Europe to offer structured doctoral training, mentorship and research opportunities in paediatrics and HIV care, with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary and international collaboration. EDCTP3 is the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking, a partnership between the European Union and the EDCTP Association supporting research to combat infectious diseases and strengthen health systems in sub-Saharan Africa.

Research project (ESC6) The successful candidate will develop his/her thesis within the research project: "Evaluate the use of AI devices to monitor early signs of respiratory failure to reduce post-discharge mortality". The project applies artificial intelligence and digital monitoring tools to detect early signs of respiratory failure in children, with the goal of reducing post-discharge mortality among children living with HIV and other vulnerable groups. The work sits at the intersection of paediatrics, digital health and implementation research, and has clear potential for clinical impact. The candidate will be expected to engage with the design, implementation and analysis of the study, and to work closely with the clinical and research teams involved.

What is offered The position provides the opportunity to work within a competitive, international research training environment under expert supervision, with access to the SUPPORT network's training activities and collaborations. The successful candidate will develop their PhD thesis while contributing to a project designed to improve outcomes for children at risk of post-discharge mortality. This is an ideal opportunity for a highly motivated early-career researcher seeking to build a career in paediatrics research within an internationally linked training network.
