Mota-Engil Africa seeks a Nurse in Kumi to provide clinical and first aid care to construction site employees, coordinate medical check-ups and support SHEQ health programmes. Requires a Diploma or Certificate in Nursing, a valid licence and 3 years of nursing experience.

About the role

Mota-Engil is a Portuguese group operating in the sectors of civil construction, public works, port operations, waste, water and logistics. The Mota-Engil Group comprises 228 companies within three major business areas - Engineering and Construction, Environment and Services, and Transport Concessions - operating in 21 countries through its branches and subsidiaries.

Mota-Engil Africa is seeking a qualified Nurse to be based at its construction project in Kumi, Uganda. The Nurse will provide clinical and first aid support to employees, maintain medical records, and promote workplace health, safety and hygiene. The role involves responding to medical emergencies, coordinating staff medical check-ups, managing health data, and supporting Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) initiatives to ensure a safe and healthy working environment within the construction project.

This is a hands-on, site-based clinical role. The successful candidate will be the first point of contact for staff health concerns on site, will maintain a well-organised site medical facility, and will work closely with site management and the SHEQ team to keep occupational health risks under control. The position demands clinical competence, calmness under pressure and a genuine commitment to protecting the wellbeing of construction workers.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide first aid and clinical care to employees and ensure proper documentation and follow-up.
  • Coordinate and monitor periodic medical check-ups for staff.
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies and arrange ambulance or hospital referrals as needed.
  • Maintain and manage medical supplies, equipment and essential materials.
  • Conduct workplace health, hygiene and sanitation inspections and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collect, analyse and report health data for SHEQ reporting requirements.
  • Organise first aid and health awareness training sessions for staff.
  • Support and participate in SHEQ programmes promoting health and safety compliance.

In practice, this means the Nurse will manage the day-to-day delivery of care on site, keep accurate treatment and referral records, ensure the first aid room and emergency equipment are always ready, and help raise health awareness among workers through regular training and safety briefings. The Nurse will also contribute to SHEQ audits and incident reviews by providing the medical perspective on workplace hazards and recommending preventive measures.

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • Diploma or Certificate in Nursing or equivalent from a recognised institution.
  • Registered Nurse with a valid licence to practise.
  • 3 years of nursing experience, preferably in occupational health or a similar environment.
  • Additional certifications such as a Certificate in Advanced Trauma Life Support, Basic Life Support or Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Excellent clinical and administrative skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and provide effective care.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and report writing.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations in construction.

The ideal candidate combines sound clinical skills with the ability to work independently in a demanding site environment, communicate clearly with workers and management, and maintain meticulous medical records.
