About the programme The Eastern Africa FAIMER Regional Institute (EAFRI) invites applications for the 2026 intake of participants. EAFRI will welcome its fourth class of Fellows in August 2026. Makerere University College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda, is the EAFRI host institution, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology Faculty of Medicine in Mbarara, Uganda, is the regional partner.

EAFRI is part of the international FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research) family of institutes, which builds the educational leadership capacity of health professions educators around the world. Its purpose is to strengthen the quality of health professions education by equipping educators with the knowledge, skills and networks they need to improve teaching, assessment, curriculum design and educational leadership at their own institutions.

Who can apply Applications for EAFRI are open to health professions educators throughout East Africa, including Burundi, the Comoros, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. EAFRI will also consider applicants from other regions of Africa.

The programme is aimed at educators - including faculty in medical, nursing, pharmacy and other health professions schools - who teach, design curricula, or lead education activities and who want to develop as educational leaders and scholars. Because the programme is part-time and online, it is designed to be completed while continuing to work at your home institution.

Curriculum EAFRI is a two-year, part-time online fellowship programme. The curriculum is based on the core curriculum of the International FAIMER Institute and is adapted to the local context. It is designed to teach: - Education methods - Leadership and management - Education scholarship and research - Project management and evaluation Each participant is required to propose and implement an education innovation project that is supported by their home institution. This project-based approach means that what Fellows learn is immediately applied in their own settings, creating tangible improvements in health professions education across the region.

Becoming a FAIMER Fellow EAFRI participants, known as FAIMER Fellows, become part of an international network of more than 2,000 FAIMER Fellows, developing strong professional bonds with other health professions educators around the world. This network provides ongoing opportunities for collaboration, mentorship and professional growth long after the programme ends.

Faculty A mix of Africa regional faculty and senior health professional educators design courses, teach, provide support for EAFRI, and serve as project advisors for Fellows' innovation project design and implementation. The combination of regional and international expertise ensures the curriculum is both globally rigorous and locally relevant.

Free tuition Tuition for EAFRI is free, and the application process is competitive. Because there is no tuition fee, the main cost to participants is the time and commitment required to complete the two-year programme.
