Counselor (Female)

About the role Busitema University is a multi-campus public university located in Eastern Uganda. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant position of Counselor (Female) within the University. This is a full-time position dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of female students and staff across the University community.

The University places strong emphasis on the welfare of its students and staff, and the successful candidate will work within the student support and health services to deliver accessible, confidential and professional counselling services. As the University continues to expand its campuses, programmes and student population in Eastern Uganda, the demand for responsive and empathetic mental health support has grown significantly, making this a vital role in promoting a healthy and supportive campus environment.

The Counselor will work with a diverse community of students and staff, many of whom may be facing academic pressure, personal difficulties, family challenges or mental health concerns. The role therefore calls for a practitioner who is approachable, non-judgemental and skilled in handling sensitive situations with care and discretion. The successful candidate will also contribute to the University's broader wellbeing agenda through awareness programmes and health promotion activities.

Key responsibilities Providing professional counselling services to female students and staff; Conducting mental health awareness programmes to promote emotional and psychological wellbeing; Supporting students in distress or crisis and providing timely, appropriate interventions; Maintaining confidential counselling records in line with professional and ethical standards; Referring cases to appropriate healthcare providers when necessary to ensure clients receive the support they need; Working closely with the University's health services, student affairs and academic departments to support student welfare.

Qualifications, skills and experience Applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as psychology, counselling, social work or a related discipline. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong empathy, excellent listening and communication skills, sound professional judgement, and a firm commitment to confidentiality. Experience working with young people or within an educational or campus environment will be an added advantage.
