About MakSBSREC The School of Biomedical Sciences Research Ethics Committee (MakSBSREC) provides ethical review and oversight of research involving human participants conducted within the School of Biomedical Sciences at Makerere University. Its work is central to ensuring that health research in Uganda is conducted to the highest ethical standards, protecting the rights, dignity, safety and welfare of research participants while supporting the scientific community in conducting ethically sound studies.
Key responsibilities As REC Administrator, the officer will support the day-to-day administration of the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Ethics Committee, facilitating the ethical review and oversight of research protocols involving human participants. Duties include coordinating committee meetings and correspondence, managing the receipt and processing of research applications, maintaining accurate records and documentation for ethical review, communicating with researchers on submission and review requirements, and supporting compliance with national and institutional ethics guidelines and regulations. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, discretion in handling sensitive research information, and the ability to support investigators and committee members through the review process.
Qualifications, desired skills and experience - Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences and Humanities, Medicine and Surgery, Ethics and Human Rights, or any related field. - Master's degree in Bioethics (an added advantage). - Up-to-date training in Human Subject Protection or Good Clinical Practice. - Proficiency in English (both spoken and written). - Prior experience in regulatory work in research studies or projects. - Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. - Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to meet deadlines.
